Superb! As someone who has also been prone to anger at the state of the world and seeing new things crop up that grind people down into acceptance (reluctant or total depending on your milage) by ubiquity this was masterfully written.
The rule of three being mentioned was also interesting especially as I notice Brad turned up in the story on three separate occasions – first from afar (the boot), then invading the (personal and/or safe) space of the meeting (the crop), and then right at her door (the cock). I find that a particularly interesting literary parallel and adore the reflection of some pagan beliefs concerning the rule of three and the idea that the more you put out the more returns to you (3 times as much – which is why blessing others is good and cursing others requires a willingness to go through more most do not have).
And while the ad was mentioned as being on social media, I do like the feeling that was given that it was limited in a local area – around the college, mentioned as being on buses, billboards, university boards – and the response being local paper but not apparently a national one which suggests it wasn’t a nation wide issue. Perhaps a testing area before national roll out?
I also love how even your misogynistic characters have a moment of doubt and reluctance when meeting one of the conquered they didn’t literally set out to claim from the get go. A fleeting moral objection that what they’re doing is wrong and that it’s a person who is clearly not in control of themselves before their own self interest kicks in – especially as that happens so much in non-sexual contexts where people will see someone in need of help but the bystander effect kicks in or their own needs and wants crop up in their head making them put the greater need of another person aside in their own favour. So beautiful recreated over and over again.
Well done!
